Inspired by . . . Life thru My Lens 04:52

January desperately needs flowers. [click to tweet

So writes one of my IG friends and I wholeheartedly agree.

So this week I'm sharing with you some my favorite blooms from 2016.

“I must have flowers, always, and always.”

― Claude Monet

“People from a planet without flowers would think we must be mad with joy

the whole time to have such things about us.”
― Iris Murdoch

The winter is over; the rains have stopped; in the countryside the flowers are in bloom.
This is the time for singing; the song of doves is heard in the fields.

(Son 2:11-12)

Inspired by . . . Life thru My Lens 13:52

We've had some beautiful, sunny days this past week. But a strong north wind, 30mph gusts at times, has made it uncomfortable to be out-of-doors. Early mornings and early evenings, when the wind is calmer, have been best.

We have more bluebonnets on the property this year - and I'm thrilled to see that they are reseeding and spreading out! I'm doing a wildflower series on my instagram, if you want to follow me there.

The black-chinned hummingbirds are back. So far I have two males and a female. If anyone has an angry bird meme, this little guy would win the prize!

Defending "his" territory, no doubt! Of course, the female is as sweet as can be.

The neighbor's horses were back this week. Looking longingly at our green pastures.

I planted some geraniums, very early, Easter morning. And then played with the camera for a bit as the sun was breaking through the clouds.

It was a beautiful, blessed morning.

I like to play with light and focus, and just see how the camera responds - - what it captures. These are new leaves on one of my rose bushes.

As I mentioned, it's been very windy. A few days ago I noticed two large birds soaring high over the property. They were quite far away, but I could tell they weren't vultures. It's unusual to see hawks together, so I think they might be a breeding pair. By zooming in on a couple of the other shots, I think they are red-tailed hawks. I can't be 100% sure, but that is a likely bet.

I've really been enjoying the female gold-fronted woodpecker. As I mentioned in a previous post, this is the first year the female has been around. So my little male has finally found a mate! I'm hoping they nest nearby and I can report baby bird sightings soon!

I like this picture because you can see  how she uses her beak to forage down under the bark for bugs.

The wildflowers are peaking early this year and there are tons of butterflies around!  No complaints here! These common buckeye butterflies are especially fun to stalk and capture. With my camera, of course!

So, what are you seeing
through your lens
this week?

Have a wonder-filled day,

Inspired by . . . front porch ramblings

After a few hours glued to the computer screen, nothing lifts the spirits and un-clouds the mind like stepping out onto my front porch. I’m not quite ready to quote Bilbo Baggins on the matter, but there is always something {or someone} going on within viewing distance of our front door.

Contrary to my initial observations the mockingbirds are extremely attentive and cautious parents.

I haven’t gotten a look at the babies yet, but there are regular feedings going on. If the parents see me watching they will wait several minutes before approaching the nest and always enter and exit from a different point. Dinner, anyone ?

With all the rain we’ve had there is an abundance of bugs this year, which leads to an abundance of other critters as well!  I haven’t been able to identify this toad, yet, please feel free to offer an id in the comments if you have one.  There are a ton of them hopping around, some so tiny you can barely see them! I’m being very careful where I step!

The Texas Spiny Lizard is always a favorite! I don’t mind being watched by a reptilian eye when it’s on a critter this size.

These are a type of squash bug, I think, although I couldn’t positively id them. They are swarming the stalks of Common Mullein right now.

This lady-bird was a surprise! I am pretty sure she is a female Eastern Bluebird, or perhaps an immature male? I have never seen bluebirds here before, although I know they’re around. I didn’t realize they were such big birds, but allaboutbirds.org lists them at 6-8inches. I guess I’ve always seen pictures of them perched contently with their feathers fluffed.

One afternoon I looked out the window and saw this guy hopping across the lawn. At first I thought he was a baby fawn. This picture doesn’t give you the best gauge of his size, especially with his ears down, but the Jackrabbits in Texas are BIG! We have a lot of these guys, and gals running around, but usually not this close to the house during the day. I was as surprised to see him as he was to see me! The black-tailed jackrabbit is actually a hare and the only one native to Texas.

Speaking of fawns, we have quite a few of those running around here, too!

Thank goodness they grow into the those ears!

I read a quote on a friend’s blog recently that gave me pause:

Summer is the time when one sheds one’s tensions with one’s clothes,

and the right kind of day is jeweled balm for the battered spirit.

A few of those days and you can become drunk

with the belief that all’s right with the world.

~Ada Louise Huxtable

It’s true, summer can be a “jeweled balm for the battered spirit.” But not this summer. Not in this country anyway, and certainly not in many other places in the world. It’s also true that there is a strong tendency to immerse oneself in nature and become “drunk with the belief that all’s right with the world.” But that is the equivalent of burying one’s head in the sand, because, clearly, all is not right with the world.

Rather, it is my hope that nature, the images shared here along with your personal experiences, serve to remind you that there is HOPE. That creations manifesto will point you to the One who will walk beside you, at times even carry you, through life’s tragedies. The One who will right every wrong, and dry every tear. The One who gives wisdom and grace. The One, the only One, who brings PEACE.

Wishing those in the US

a safe and happy 4th of July -

and to all, peace in your

hearts this summer.

Shalom,

Inspired by . . . Life thru My Lens 27:52

I bought myself a {cheap} tripod for my birthday.

So I’ve been playing. Mostly testing out the max zoom. Seeing how sharp the pictures turn out, etc.

I have so many pictures, I thought Mona’s collage templates would be the best way to share them with you, along with some wisdom and inspiration from Helen Keller.

Enjoy.

Inspired by . . . Life thru My Lens 9:52

This was supposed to be Life thru My Lens 8:52, but often sometimes life doesn’t happen according to our plan. My love’s birthday was last week, so Monday and Tuesday were consumed with preparations. His gift, an aquarium, took some planning - and some rearranging of the furniture! Said aquarium is happily bubbling along, awaiting LIFE.

Believe it or not, a week ago we were enjoying 75 degree weather and SUN. These pictures prove it, even though we’ve been in the 30’s and 40’s under a mask of grey and freezing rain since then. The sun will come out tomorrow? Not likely. We’re looking at this for another week, although with warmer temps. A friend of mine suggested that all the rain we’ve had this winter will make for a good wildflower season. Her words ignite a spark of HOPE. I hope these images do the same in the hearts of those of you who are still several feet under WHITE. Enjoy.

The quintessential early bird, this American Robin was found digging for worms under a bench in Fredericksburg, Texas.

This gateway at Wildseed Farms beckons young and old explorers alike. I was hoping to find a feathered friend or two on the other side, but alas, the feeders were empty.

Even in the winter there is beauty to be found here. I was disappointed to see that they let their ponds go during the off season. Last time I was here they were teaming with frogs and fish.

Now they are overcome with another, lower, form of life.
