Inspired by. . . a woolly bear

 

If you live in Northern Mexico, the US, or southern Canada, chances are you have seen a woolly bear caterpillar.

I chased this little guy around my front yard for about fifteen minutes the other day! We had tons of them in Vermont in the late fall, but having lived in AZ and TX for the last 20+ years, I can't recall the last time I've seen one.

They say the Woolly Bear can predict the winter weather. The more brown bands, the more mild the winter. If that's true then, according to this little guy, we're in for a cold one.

You can read about how the Woolly Bear became famous HERE. I found it very interesting that the "original" woolly bear came from Bear Mountain State Park in New York. This area is well known to my family; we drove through it nearly every summer on our way my cousin's house.

Whatever you believe about its weather predicting abilities, the woolly bear is a welcome sign of the changing seasons.

    I so understand the chasing around the yard! lol I found one too, minus any brown bands (here on the Texas gulf coast)...yikes I'm not a fan of cold weather! :)

    This little guy is "confirming" what I'm thinking our winter will be like, long and cold! No brown bands, at all!! Love the first photo.

    Hi June - SO sweet ... I haven't seen that hairy catepillar before ... a great contrast with the black catepillar crossing over the red leaf.
