Inspired by . . . that the world may know

Have you ever done something you didn't want to do out of love for another person? I'm going to bet that you have. And when you did, it was a beautiful witness of sacrificial love.

Scripture tells us that Jesus laid aside His glory and power (Phil 2:7) when He became a man. He did this willingly, knowing the purpose of His earthly time from the drawing of His first breath.

He knew it when satan tempted Him in the desert, offering Him the Kingdom without the pain of the cross. (Matt 4:8) And He knew it that night in the garden when He asked the Father to spare Him. (Mar 14:36)

More than the manger, the garden shows me the fullness of Christ's manhood. No sane person would submit to the torture of the cross without first determining that there was no other way. Gethsemane shows me the sanity of my Savior. [click to tweet]

Before Jesus went to the garden the night of His arrest He told His disciples: "I shall not talk much longer with you, for the prince of this world approaches. He has no rights over Me, but the world must be shown that I love the Father and am doing what He commands;" (John 14:30-31)

There is no question that Jesus went willingly to the cross. His sacrifice is proof of His great love for us. But the cross is not just about us. One of the last statements Jesus makes is, "the world must be shown that I love the Father."

The cross is not only evidence of Christ's love for us, it is an affirmation of His great love for the Father. [click to tweet] One of the primary lessons of the cross is Jesus' love for God. We are often so focused on His love for us that we overlook the testimony of His love for the Father.

The enemy has degenerated love into many shades. But love is only pure when given freely. Perfect love cannot be coerced, faulted, or oppressed.

Love is a choice and when love is chosen, it is true. [click to tweet]

God gave us free will, even knowing the evil that would come of it because He could do nothing else. God is love and love is God. Love does not exist without God.

What God asked of Jesus He asks of us. Sacrifice born of love.

The acts will vary but the results are the same:

That the world will see our love for the Father.

By this shall all men know that ye are My disciples,
if ye have love one to another. (Joh 13:35)

Shalom,

Inspired by . . . Psalm 133

A Song of Ascents. Of David. Behold, how good and pleasant it is when brothers dwell in unity! It is like the precious oil on the head, running down on the beard, on the beard of Aaron, running down on the collar of his robes! It is like the dew of Hermon, which falls on the mountains of Zion! For there the LORD has commanded the blessing, life forevermore. (Psa 133:1-3)

It wasn't difficult, upon reading these words, to see the juxtaposition to the state of things in our world today. It is rare to find unity between brothers in both the literal and figurative sense of the word.

But then I realized that is exactly David's point. Disunity is nothing new. It's been around since Cain killed his brother Abel. It will be around until Jesus returns.

David tells us to Behold! for unity is a rare and wonderful thing. It is sacred, like the precious oil poured over the High Priest's head.

That's why Jesus said, "A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another: just as I have loved you, you also are to love one another. By this all people will know that you are My disciples, if you have love for one another." (Joh 13:34-35)

Jesus knew that if love and unity was witnessed among believers, people would take notice. He also knew that we would need this love and unity if we were to endure to the end.
And let us consider how to stir up one another to love and good works, not neglecting to meet together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another, and all the more as you see the Day drawing near. (Heb 10:24-25)
I'll be the first to admit that I have not always fulfilled His commandment. I have failed to love. And yes, I believe that my responsibility to love is greater because of Who I confess to represent.

I'm not talking about a namby-pamby love that ignores and tolerates sin. I'm talking about the fierce love of the Father, the love that desires to see the His children made whole, pure and blessed.

This is the love we must have for each other, and for the world. And we can. When we submit to His will and allow Him to empower us to do His will.

Not the love that comes and goes, but the love that abides. Not a spirit that separates and divides, but one of unity and accord. Not minds that seek only to debate, but minds which seek to understand.

Because where love reigns, God reigns. And until He returns in the flesh, we are His ambassadors.

May our words and actions honor
and glorify Him.

Blessings,

Inspired by . . . a profound mystery

I wrote a post about submission a week or so ago, and thought maybe the subject might need a bit of follow up. Depending upon where you are in your spiritual walk and understanding of God, you may not be ready to fully embrace the concept of submission. Especially when it comes to marriage. But I thought these insights I gleaned from Beth Moore, offered up in her study of Paul, might help all of us move further along.

Sometimes understanding what something does NOT mean, is key to understanding what it DOES mean. There are several things that submission does not mean, when understood in biblical context, but the one I want to communicate here is:

Submission does not mean slavery. The Greek word Paul uses in Ephesians 5:22 is completely different than the word he used in Ephesians 6:5 where he exhorts slaves to obey their masters.

Wives, submit yourselves unto your own husbands, as unto the Lord. Eph 5:22

The word here is hupotassō {hoop-ot-as'-so}. It is a compound word meaning “to place under or in an orderly fashion.” Paul is advocating order in the home, just as he did for order in the church, order in government, etc. Scripture clearly teaches us that our God is a God of order, not chaos. Should we really be surprised that He designed an order to family life?

It may help to remember, too, that Paul is also the author of Galatians 3:28, where he advocated equality for men and women. A radical concept in his day!

There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither bond nor free,

there is neither male nor female: for ye are all one in Christ Jesus. Gal 3:28

 OakLeavesSunlight

Beth admits that the concept of a submissive wife went against her grain, until she learned two things about God that changed her attitude. Maybe they will help you, too.

1. God is good and loving. He would never give approval to meanness or abuse. Any misuse of submission by either the husband or the wife is sin.

2. God granted women a measure of freedom in submission that we can learn to enjoy. It is a relief to know that as a wife and mother I am not totally responsible for my family. I have a husband to look to for counsel and direction. I can rely on his toughness when I am too soft and his logic when I am too emotional.

Now if you’re still thinking that this command to submit to our husbands is too much and unfair, let’s have a look at what God commands the husbands concerning their wives.

Husbands, love your wives, even as Christ also loved the church, and gave Himself for it;

That He might sanctify and cleanse it with the washing of water by the word,

That He might present it to Himself a glorious church, not having spot, or wrinkle, or any such thing;

but that it should be holy and without blemish.

So ought men to love their wives as their own bodies.

He that loveth his wife loveth himself. Eph 5:25-28

Wow! I don’t know about you, but that reads like a pretty tall order. Especially when we look at the word Paul used for love. The Greek word agapaō. We’re not talking about a feeling or emotion here. No, agapaō love goes much deeper than that: “to esteem, love, indicating a direction of the will and finding one’s joy in something or someone.”

Doesn’t every woman want to be loved like that? I know I do .

agapao

Friend, I encourage you to test God in this matter. Yes, I said test God. {You can read Malachi 3:10 if you don’t think it’s okay to test God on His promises.} Following a path toward Biblical Womanhood is a good step to unleashing the power of the Holy Spirit in your marriage. Without Christ in your marriage, you cannot submit to your husband and he cannot love you with an agapaō love!

Beth describes marriage as a stool with three legs. A submissive wife, a loving husband, and Christ. The stool can’t stand without all three.

No, we don’t live in a perfect world. Our stools may lean a little {or a lot} in one direction from time to time. As Beth says, “A wife submitting to an unloving husband is as lopsided as a loving husband sacrificing for a domineering wife.”

Only God created marriage and only He can hold it together.

No marriage is perfect, but I am deeply blessed with a husband who loves me with an agapaō love. He finds JOY in me. In turn, he is blessed with a wife who respects and esteems him - - rather than one who is defiant and derisive. It is our mutual desire to keep Christ at the center of our marriage that allows this to be true. It’s something we work at every day and I can tell you with 100% certainty, it’s worth the effort.

I feel led to reiterate one thing before closing:

God is good and loving. He would never give approval to meanness or abuse. Any misuse of submission by either the husband or the wife is sin.

This certainly isn’t a definitive word on submission. It is a complex concept and many who are more educated and wiser than I have written on the subject. I’ve included some recommendations below for further reading. {feel free to share additional, biblically based, resources on this subject in the comments}

My prayer is that my words here have brought you closer to the heart of God in this matter,

and that you will continue to seek His will for your life.

Going Deeper,

June

Inspired by . . . God’s Love Letter to Women

I hadn’t intended to do another post for St Valentine’s Day, but then I remembered this letter, and wanted to share it with all of you, my sweet friends.

HeartPetals_mp_earth

Dear Woman,

When I created the heavens and the earth, I spoke them into being.

When I created man, I formed him and breathed life into his nostrils. But you woman, I fashioned after I breathed the breath of life into man because your nostrils are too delicate. I allowed a deep sleep to come over him so I could patiently and perfectly fashion you.

Man was put to sleep so that he could not interfere with the creativity. From one bone I fashioned you. I chose the bone that protects his heart and his lungs and supports him, as you are meant to do. Around this one bone I shaped you. I modeled you. I created you perfectly and beautifully.

Your characteristics are as the rib, strong yet delicate and fragile. You provide protection for the most delicate organ in man, his heart. His heart is the center of his being; his lungs hold the breath of life. The rib cage will allow itself to be broken before it will allow damage to the heart.

Support the man as the rib cage supports the body. You were not taken from his feet, to be under him, nor were you taken from his head, to be above him. You were taken from his side, to stand beside him and be held close to his side.

You are my perfect angel. You are my beautiful little girl. You have grown to be a splendid woman of excellence, and my eyes fill when I see the virtues in your heart. Your eyes - don't change them. Your lips - how lovely when they part in prayer. Your nose, so perfect in form, your hands so gentle in touch. I've caressed your face in your deepest sleep; I've held your heart close to mine.

Of all that lives and breathes, you are the most like me. Adam walked with me in the cool of the day and yet he was lonely. He could not see me or touch me. He could only feel me.

So everything I wanted Adam to share and experience with me, I fashioned in you: my holiness, my strength, my purity, my love, my protection and support. You are special because you are the extension of me.

Man represents my image, woman my emotions. Together you represent the totality of God. So man - treat woman well. Love her, respect her, for she is fragile. In hurting her, you hurt me. What you do to her, you do to me. In crushing her, you only damage your own heart, the heart of your Father, and the heart of her Father.

Woman, support man. In humility, show him the power of emotion I have given you. In gentle quietness show your strength. In love, show him that you are the rib that protects his inner self.

Love,

God

As much as I wish it otherwise, I did NOT write this letter, however I’ve long since lost the name of the author.

If you know who wrote this, please share in the comments.

In is my prayer that you’ll take these words to heart, and may we all learn

to show our strength, in gentle quietness.

Blessings,

June

Inspired by . . . natural love

Being that St. Valentine’s Day is celebrated this Saturday, I have a love story to to tell you. It’s a bit unconventional, but I think you will enjoy it.

One day, last July, while I was sitting on my front porch, I noticed a pair of cardinals building a nest in a nearby cedar tree. I had already enjoyed watching the scissor-tail flycatcher family grow and fledge, and looked forward to meeting the cardinal family littles.

Within a day or two the nest was complete and momma cardinal was soon sitting on the nest full-time, which alerted me that eggs had been laid. Then, my husband and I went out of town for a few days and when we returned I was disappointed to see that the nest had been abandoned. I wondered why, but really didn’t give it much thought.

Time rocked along until one late afternoon when my husband set up the sprinkler to water the lawn. I’m always on high alert when we’re watering, because the water attracts the birds and animals.  Today was no exception. The sprinkler was hitting one of the trees in our front yard and a pair of cardinals had come to bathe.

I took about a million shots! But it wasn’t until I downloaded the images onto my computer that I realized, to my horror, that the female cardinal had a terrible wound on the back of her head. I marveled that she was even alive. Birds are not hardy creatures and I was saddened to think that she would likely soon die.

I began thinking a lot about the wounded cardinal and her mate. I greatly hoped to see her again, to know that she survived. I watched for the pair, and listened for their call {one of the few bird calls I know} whenever I was outside.

A couple of weeks later I spotted the pair at my bird feeders. The female seemed to be healing, but what really surprised me was the male! I hadn’t noticed earlier when I photographed them bathing, but he looked like he’d been in a battle too!

I began to wonder if it was this cardinal pair that had built that abandoned nest in the cedar tree in early July. Perhaps the nest had been attacked and the female had been hurt defending her eggs. Male cardinals are very attentive to their mates and their young. It is not uncommon to see males feeding their mates, and caring for their newborn chicks. Many experts even believe that cardinals mate for life.

I could only imagine how this male cardinal fought to defend his mate and unborn chicks!

Cardinal_Male2

Instinct? Sure, you can argue that, but it’s been my experience that most non-dominant animals flee from attack, they don’t engage their attacker. Song birds are some of the most innocent, and docile creatures on our planet. It may be a purely romantic notion, but I believe these two are a love-match!
