Inspired by . . . always rejoicing

There is a reason that Christ is described as a man of sorrows, acquainted with grief. And it doesn't just have to do with the affliction He experienced here on earth. As John 2:25 tells us, "He Himself knew what was in a man."

In this age of instant images, we have all come to know, and are constantly reminded of, the depravity of humanity.

I daresay if we do not feel great sorrow over the state of our world something is amiss in our soul. [click to tweet]

It's not just what we see happening out there, it's what we are all experiencing to one degree or another in our own lives. The breakdown of relationships, increased anger and division (both in and outside of the church), even our physical bodies are breaking down as cancer and chronic illness increase. The effects of sin and decay have simmered just below the surface for thousands of years. Lately, things seem to be reaching a boiling point.

While this gives us cause for sorrow and prayer, it does not give us cause for alarm, fear or bitterness.

Nor should we mope about in an Eyore-like state.
Our Lord trusted no one, and never placed His faith in people, yet He was never suspicious or bitter. ~Oswald Chambers
In chapter six of second Corinthians Paul gives a Christian manifesto of sorts. Paradoxes abound! After all, the message of the cross is foolishness.

But it's not only unbelievers who struggle with Paul's words.

"in our sorrows, we have always cause for joy;"

How do we keep from despair, yet at the same time keep our hearts open to the sorrow we must feel if compassion and love are to rule our minds and actions? [click to tweet]

Remember the Source of your joy.

If you are looking to the things of this world to satisfy and bring you joy, you will be disappointed.
If our trust is placed in human beings, we will end up despairing of everyone. ~Oswald Chambers
True joy comes from the Holy Spirit. Our strength comes from the joy of the Lord.
For the kingdom of God is not a matter of eating and drinking but of righteousness and peace and joy in the Holy Spirit. (Rom 14:17)
And do not be grieved, for the joy of the LORD is your strength." (Neh 8:10)
There is only one Being who can completely satisfy to the absolute depth of the hurting human heart, and that is the Lord Jesus Christ. ~Oswald Chambers
Tapping into that joy even when we are at our most sorrowful is not as difficult as you may think.
Be filled with the Spirit, addressing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody to the Lord with your heart, giving thanks always and for everything to God the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, (Eph 5:18-20)
Obeying this scripture may need to begin as a discipline. You may have to force yourself to be grateful and give thanks in all things. But it will not always be so. God will bless your obedience and change your heart.

The God of your salvation will fill your heart with joy. Being identified with Christ will always mean sorrow this side of heaven. But just as we are together in the likeness of His death, certainly we also shall be in the likeness of His resurrection. (Rom 6:5)

And that, dear ones, is cause for great joy!

Shalom,

Inspired by . . . weakness

The rhythms of my days have changed. I'm trying to embrace the changes, but most days I fail.

Weakness is a hard teacher. Her lessons are humility and patience. I thought I'd come farther along, but each day reveals my lack.

If God's power is made perfect in my weakness then I have to trust that there is a purpose in this season. Even though I can't see it now, He is perfect in all His ways and I must trust Him and this process.

I wonder if this cloak of darkness that covers me and fills my limbs with led isn't a gift? Is this how Christ felt as He walked ever closer to the cross? Can we really identify with Him in His sufferings? Maybe not fully, but I think it benefits us to try.

The JOY of the morning often comes after the weeping of the night. [click to tweet]

For how can we live to Christ if we do not first die to Him? This is the process of sanctification. May the hardships of this life mortify our sin and raise us to newness in life.

This is one of the lessons of Lent, I think. There is darkness, but it is not a hollow darkness devoid of hope and promise.

The sheer, raw beauty of the cross is that it is not the end.  It is the beginning and yet a fulfillment of a plan put into motion before the creation of the world.

So great is our Father's love for us.

*****************************************************

I wrote the words above several weeks ago now but, somehow, forgot and never went back to finish and hit publish.

I thought about discarding them all together but they still resonate strongly with me and, I think, are worth sharing.

There are a few things we all have in common in this life. The frailty of our human condition and the suffering that results is one of them.

There can be beauty in weakness. A purpose to our suffering. Scars can be badges of honor.

When God is glorified and our faith increases.

It's difficult when we're in the midst of a trial to step back and see what God is doing. We often don't have the emotional reserves or clarity of mind to do so.

Amy shared a wonderful quote from Lilias Trotter's biography on her blog Velvet Ashes earlier this week:
“we do not need to come again and again to wring an unwilling answer out of our Father, but to search in His Word till He gives a promise which meets our case and then step out on it in the bare faith which believes that it receives.”
This, I think, is the one thing we need as we walk through the valley. Find the promise in His word that meets your need.[click to tweet

It's there. It is always there. Grab onto it with both hands of faith. Sit and wait with it, or step out over the cliff with it, whichever it may be that He is calling you to do.

Blessings,

Inspired by . . . Life thru My Lens 02:52

I went for a winter walk today. Up to the hill where we're building our new home. Everything at this stage looks stalled and undone. But sometimes that is the way with dreams. One must have an imagination.

We're in between cold snaps. Yesterday was cold and windy. Today is dreary but warm. Tonight and tomorrow are supposed to be especially frigid.

Texas.

As I walk I sense the shallow breaths of the sleeping earth. Even the sky is cloaked. Wrapped in layers of gray.

I'm thinking of Lizzy longing for her Jane. "My view from here is rather bleak." Or something like that . . .

Today, my view is the same. My Dreamer is away and since he is my heart, I feel justified in feeling so.

I'm hard pressed to find beauty today. It's always there, of course. Some days my eyes are not open enough to see it.

On the way back I remember something that I've been waiting to share with you. A pocket of JOYful remembrance that increases my step and reminds me that all days are not gray and dreary.

Because sometimes, even in winter, Texas gives us butterflies.

We bless thee, Lord for opening up to us the volume of
nature where we may read and consider thy works.

Blessings,

Inspired by . . . 3 G's and a J

It's been a while since I've talked about JOY here on the blog. Some of you may remember back in October of 2014, I actually wrote about JOY for 31 days as part of the #write31days challenge. What an amazing time that was! It's worth going back to have a look!

Who knew there was so much to say about this little 3-letter word! As it turns out, there is more to say and these truths are more relevant today than ever before.

The harvest of the Spirit is love, JOY, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, fidelity, gentleness, and self-control.

As most of you know JOY is not the same thing as happiness. The word happiness comes from the Latin "hap" meaning chance or temporary pleasures. Whereas JOY is not tied to a sense of wellbeing. Rather it is a spiritual response to receiving the Gospel.

JOY is based upon an objective reality, not subjective emotions.

Non-believers can and do experience JOY. When their values are in harmony with their behavior a sense of JOY is experienced. But true, Christian JOY, at its heart, is the JOY of salvation. The power of the Holy Spirit invades and transforms us and we experience true and lasting JOY.

The process of transformation often looks something like this:

GUILT - Guilt is something that is taboo in our world today. We don't talk about it, and we sure don't ever admit it! But the truth is, we are all in the same condition. Sin is our condition, the state of our souls. And it's terminal. Part of the misery is not acknowledging this truth.

GRACE - Grace is the answer to guilt. We receive all of God's riches at Christ's expense. God's love has no regard for our merits.

GRATITUDE - Gratitude is the only right response to grace.

JOY - Joy is the child birthed in the fullness of gratitude.

There are three things that hinder true JOY:

Foolishness - Being half-hearted creatures as described by C.S. Lewis in the following quote from The Weight of Glory:
“It would seem that Our Lord finds our desires not too strong, but too weak. We are half-hearted creatures, fooling about with drink and sex and ambition when infinite joy is offered us, like an ignorant child who wants to go on making mud pies in a slum because he cannot imagine what is meant by the offer of a holiday at the sea. We are far too easily pleased.”
Forgetfulness - Just like the Israelites in the desert, we forget God's great acts of deliverance. We forget His benefits and promises.

All of this leads to Faintheartedness - we begin to listen to the evil one.

Don't allow these things to cause you to stumble.
You were running well; who hindered you from following the truth? Gal 5:7
Preach the Gospel to yourself daily. Work out your salvation. Remember that gratitude and thankfulness give birth to JOY.

The JOY of a believer is one of the most effective tools to disarm the devil.

The world is dark.
JOY is Light.
The Light has overcome.

Be an overcomer!

Blessings,

Inspired by . . . good news of great JOY

And the angel said to them, "Fear not, for behold, I bring you good news of great joy that will be for all the people. For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Savior, who is Christ the Lord. Luk 2:10-11

For all people.
God doesn't care about your race, financial status, or even your creed.
His gift of salvation is free to ALL people. Why?

For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in Him should not perish, but have everlasting life. Joh 3:16

Because He loves you.
His gift came wrapped in swaddling clothes.
Have you opened it for yourself?

Blessings,

Inspired by . . . the message of JOY

And she gave birth to her firstborn son and wrapped Him in swaddling cloths and laid Him in a manger, because there was no place for them in the inn. And in the same region there were shepherds out in the field, keeping watch over their flock by night. And an angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were filled with great fear. And the angel said to them, "Fear not, for behold, I bring you good news of great joy that will be for all the people. For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Savior, who is Christ the Lord. And this will be a sign for you: you will find a baby wrapped in swaddling cloths and lying in a manger." And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God and saying, "Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace among those with whom He is pleased!" When the angels went away from them into heaven, the shepherds said to one another, "Let us go over to Bethlehem and see this thing that has happened, which the Lord has made known to us."  Luk 2:7-15

God didn’t need the World Wide Web to announce the birth of His Son. He had created the heavens and the earth, the angels and their angelic voices with which to do the job. The angels didn’t appear in the courts of grandeur of the king either, they appeared on a lonely hillside, to the simplest of men.
The miracle of His birth, the Savoir of the World, comes to us the same way today. A JOYful carol and a shining light that finds the lonely places of our average life and transforms them into purposeful living.
We share a lot of interesting, and fun things on social media. Above all, this season {and in 2016!} let’s share about the transforming power of His love. Amen?

Inspired by . . . ten minutes of breathless

I had just finished saying goodbye to my sweet man, when I turned back toward the cottage and there he was . . .

. . . dancing from bud to blossom. A bit of sunshine, laced with night. His tail dipped in sky and scarlet.

My camera might as well have been on the moon for all the good it was doing inside the cottage.

I knew this fairy-like creature to be fickle. Any movement in his direction would likely mean loss.

I stood for a moment, mesmerized and thankful, before deciding I had to try!

It was still there when I reached the door and slipped inside. Camera now in hand, I peaked outside, disappointment at the ready.

Delight!

Planting that butterfly weed was one of the best decisions I’ve made all year!

I spent the next ten minutes standing on my porch, motionless except for my trigger finger, in a state of pure JOY, as he danced with the hummingbirds {he is bigger than a hummingbird!!} and drank from my flowers.

Inspired by . . . owning it

Prelude:

I wrote this post back in November, after my #write31days experience, but never got around to posting it.  There is something about God’s timing {sigh}.

The feelings I express below have not changed, but there is now a new dimension to my #write31days experience. You see, God knew what I’d be facing over the next few months. My series on JOY, as much as I meant it to bless others, God meant it/used it to prepare me for what lay ahead.

My friend, He cares for us – YOU - in the most intimate of ways. Do not ever doubt this Truth. The words of Corrie ten Boom, that I shared with you at the close of 2014, have never been more relevant to me than they are now.

TenBoomQuote

November, 2014

I’m different.

I know this because I’ve been in writers groups. I’ve read your blogs about why you write, how you write and what happens if you don’t write.

Very little of it resonates with me.

I’m different.

Different does not equal less than.

Different does not equal better.

Different is just different.

I’ve been a reader of words all my life. I love words. How they are used, their histories, etc. It never occurred to me to write anything myself. Nothing produced in school had tempted me to continue. Nothing simmering inside, yearning to get out. I was happy to read what others had written.

Then one day, about fourteen years ago, God woke me up from a dream and told me to write the rest of the story.

It was . . . odd. Like a dream itself.

So are the other six books and the literally hundreds of scenes –that-spawn-stories that He has given me since.

And then in 2011 came this blog. A new world, new blessings.

All of this, and yet I have never considered myself a writer.

My friends and family use the term without abandon. “Oh, she’s written. . . .” blah, blah, blah. “She’s an author.” blah, blah, blah

I sort of smile, and shrink inside myself, because it’s not me.

The mediocre, yes. The words stumbled upon, yes. That’s all me.

Anything you’ve read that’s clever, creative, meaningful, profound – that’s God.

And yet, saying that sounds so presumptuous . . .

. . . and yet.

The words inside me have been poured in, to be poured out. I am not their creator. They are not birthed from something inside of me. I must continually go to the Source to be filled.

I don’t have a daily discipline of writing - - Gasp! I know.

I write when inspired. And sometimes I write uninspired, to fill this space because I think I need to, and you can likely tell the difference.

This is why I don’t participate in challenges or prompts {unless they are photographic}. I greatly admire those of you who can write for five minutes every Friday. Those of you who have rocked this #write31days for the past five years. I sit in awe of you all, truly. However, this awe does not translate into a burning need to participate. The desire is not there. Probably because the talent is not there. I know my limits.

So when I found myself deciding to take the #write31days challenge, I looked around wondering what had just happened. It’s one of those decisions you make that you didn’t really make. This should have been my first clue that God was up to something. When God takes me out of my comfort zone, it’s not a gentle nudge. {Thank you, God} No, it’s more like being hit by the bullet train.

So I began. And God, in His great mercy, left manna for me every morning. For 31 days.

And somewhere along the way, day 27 actually – I’m a slow learner - I realized that God was trying to show me something.

I am a writer.

I’ve come to a place where I can own it.

I am a writer.

But God also confirmed for me something I already knew; I am not the Author.

It’s true people use these terms interchangeably, however, they do also have very individual meanings.

Author - one that originates or creates

Writer - someone whose work is to write books, poems, stories, etc.

These last 31 days have been far from a walk in the desert for me. Meeting God over a bowl of manna each morning has been a Gift. Receiving confirmation of His will, for at least part of my life, has been free-ing. Truly a JOYful experience, for which I am eternally thankful.

JOY_figurine

Most assuredly, I say to you, a servant is not greater than his master;

nor is He who is sent greater than He who sent Him. John 13:16

He must increase, but I must decrease. John 3:30

Blessings,

June

Inspired by . . . the Hope of His Coming Vol. 5

MainGraphicAdvent2014

And again, Isaiah says, "A descendant of Jesse will appear; he will come to rule the Gentiles,
and they will put their hope in him."
May God, the source of hope, fill you with all joy and peace by means of your faith in Him,
so that your hope will continue to grow by the power of the Holy Spirit. Romans 15:12-13

I’m praying for you today.

Yes, YOU.

I’m echoing Paul’s prayer. He was praying for those who read his letter to the Romans. And I’m praying the same for those of you who are reading this letter {blog}.

I know you’re hurting. And I know for some of you, your first instinct is to deny that, it’s true.

I know it’s true because, to one degree or another, we all have hurt. We all face disappointment.

What I don’t know is where you go when you’re hurting, when you face disappointment.
Where do you find peace? JOY? On who or what do you place your greatest HOPE?

If you place your HOPE on material things, or individuals you’ve probably already figured out that these things may puff you up for a time, but they don’t fill your soul.

True, heavenly, spiritual joy is filling to the soul;
it has a satisfaction in it,
answerable to the soul's vast and just desires.

And there is only One Source of true JOY, real PEACE, and secure HOPE: Jesus Christ
You’ve heard this - - You may even KNOW it. After all, this time of year all you hear about is HOPE, JOY AND PEACE. But the more you hear about it, the more you look at your life and wonder if it’s real. Is true HOPE, JOY and PEACE even attainable?

JoyFruitofFaith

Yes, but how?

Firstly, by prayer. We must go to God for it. Prayer fetches in spiritual JOY and PEACE.

Secondly, by believing.  True substantial JOY is the fruit of faith. 1 Peter 1:8

The joke is that the answer to all the questions in Sunday school is the same =  Jesus

But it is true. Jesus IS the answer. Jesus is the God of hope. He is the foundation on which our hope is built, and He is the builder: He is both the object of our hope and the Author of it. Any hope that is not fastened on God is a fancy that will deceive us.

Paul knew this. He knew how important it was for believer’s to place their hope in God, rather than on earthly things.

It is why he prayed for them.

It is why I pray for you.

May God, the source of hope, fill you with all joy and peace by means of your faith in Him,
so that your hope will continue to grow by the power of the Holy Spirit.
Amen.

Inspired by . . . Day 31: the JOY of the Lord

Let them praise the name of the Lord: for His name alone is excellent;

His glory is above the earth and heaven.

He also exalteth the horn of His people, the praise of all His saints;

even of the children of Israel, a people near unto Him. Praise ye the Lord. Psalm 148:13-14

Phoebe_CrepeMyrtle

This is it! Day 31. Wow. Seriously, I can’t believe I managed to write a blog post {and have it posted!} every day for 31 days. If you knew my life, you would see what a miracle this is – but then, your life is probably a lot like mine, at least in the time department {or lack thereof}, so if you’ve been here every day and/or if you’ve been writing for 31 days, too – thank you, and congratulations – we made it!!!

The very best part about the last 31 days is God, and the changes He’s made in our lives. I don’t think I’m being presumptuous here. He has changed me, and I know He has changed at least one {or more} of you - -for the better. That’s what happens when we read His word. Believe His word, and act on His word.

Thank God, the JOY of the Lord is an actual experience now,

and it goes beyond any conscious experience,

because the JOY of the Lord takes us into the consciousness of God,

and the honor at stake in our body is the honor of God.

Have we realized that the Son of God

has been formed in us by His wonderful Redemption?

This is the glory of the saint here and now—

the glory of actual holiness manifested in actual life.

Oh, my friend, I pray this is true for you; that the JOY of the Lord is an actual experience! My heart aches for this to be true in your life.

Phoebe_Rock

Endings are the hardest part for me to write. Always have been.

So, rather than write an ending, I’m looking at this JOY series as a beginning! I love writing about JOY here on the blog and that’s not going to change. Plus, I have some other topics planned for the next couple of months to inspire us as we all navigate through the holidays - - with JOY!

I hope you’ll join me.

Inspired by . . . Day 30: the JOY of solitude

This post is part of a 31 day series on JOY

You may access all the past days by clicking here.

2014_31DaysButton400

The Lord is good unto them that wait for Him, to the soul that seeketh Him.

It is good that a man should both hope and quietly wait for the salvation of the Lord.

It is good for a man that he bear the yoke in his youth.

He sitteth alone and keepeth silence, because he hath borne it upon him. Lamentations 3:25-28

My one word for 2014 is Intentional. My life had gotten to the point where I felt like I was just sort of sailing through, re-acting to things rather than being pro-active about what filled my days. Some things are out of our control, of course, but I felt God calling me to be more intentional about my time.

Part of that had to do with my blogging. I felt God calling me to quantity and consistency in blogging. I’ve worked hard this year to write what He inspires me to write. Who reads it is ultimately up to Him. But a big part of inspired writing is spending time with the One who inspires you! I’ve done better, but I’m no where near where I want to be when it comes to intentional time with God.

Any soul who has no solitary place alone with God is in supreme peril spiritually.

Walkway_pdpa_yesteryear

pdpa_yesteryear

After reading that quote from Oswald Chambers you may be thinking that “supreme peril” seems a bit dramatic. If we were having this conversation over coffee, I might get a little demonstrative at this point. I would probably clasp your arm and say, “Trust me friend, you don’t want to be startled into the realization that the breath you feel on the back of your neck is that of a lion! Don’t be so confident as to think you’ll see him coming.”

Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil walks about like a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour. 1 Peter 5:8

Okay, so maybe now you’re thinking I’m being a bit too dramatic. Better drama than apathy.

I know what you have done; I know that you are neither cold nor hot.

How I wish you were either one or the other!
But because you are lukewarm,

neither hot nor cold, I am going to spit you out of my mouth! Rev 3:15-16

You don’t need a blog post from me explaining why time alone with God is important. We all know that it is, and why it is. Personally, I want it to be a habit that turns into a natural occurrence, like breathing. Some of you have this – don’t take it for granted – guard it as if it were your greatest treasure! The JOY of the Lord is our strength!

Jesus Christ refers to Himself as “the first and the last.”

It is in the middle that human choices are made;

the beginning and the end remain with God.

The decrees of God are birth and death,

and in between those limits man makes his own distress or JOY.

One of those choices is whether or not we put God first. If you’re like me,  not quite there yet, this might be a good prayer:

God grant we may learn more and more of the profound JOY of getting

alone with God in the dark of the night and toward the early dawn.

Swing_pdpa_linenblind

pdpa_linenblind

And this might be a good question:

Do I begin every day by asking God what I should do

and end it by asking how I did?

Oh, my, this one resonates, friend. What a perfect way

to {re}align our minds at the beginning and end

of each day!

With JOY,
